Blue House Draws Line on 'Yoon Mi-hyang Controversy'... Civic Group-Affiliated Aides Criticize "Accounting Treatment Incomprehensible"
[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sun-hee] Regarding the accounting fraud allegations raised against the Justice and Memory Solidarity (Jeong-ui-yeon), the Blue House has officially stated that "it is not appropriate to make a public statement." However, the atmosphere among the Blue House's internal aides is quite different. Aides who have direct experience working in civic groups find the controversy regrettable and also voice that the accounting fraud allegations against Yoon Mi-hyang, the elected member of the Democratic Party of Korea, should be dealt with strictly.
On the 20th, a senior Blue House official told Asia Economy over the phone regarding the controversy surrounding Yoon, "It is a matter for the party to make a comprehensive judgment after hearing the explanation from the person involved," adding, "The Blue House has no grounds to judge the truth of the allegations of misappropriation of Yoon's campaign funds." However, the official hinted that a party-level decision would be made soon, saying, "It will not take long until the party makes a decision."
Aides with experience in civic groups have expressed harsh criticism about the incident through unofficial channels. One aide who worked for a long time in a civic group recently said in a private setting, "I do not know the exact truth of the controversy surrounding Yoon," but pointed out, "If it is an organization dealing with very sensitive issues such as comfort women, which are also diplomatically delicate, shouldn't the accounting have been managed transparently above all else?" He continued, "Accounting for public interest corporations operated with donations or sponsorships can be somewhat complicated, and small civic groups sometimes make mistakes because they cannot afford professional accountants, but the case of Jeong-ui-yeon is different," and criticized, "It is incomprehensible that accounting has been handled in this way."
Another aide from a civic group background said, "Yoon, who aimed to enter the central political stage, seems to have handled sensitive accounting issues carelessly," and raised their voice, "Since the sincerity of Jeong-ui-yeon's activities itself could be questioned, the allegations of misappropriation by Yoon personally must be dealt with strictly."
When the controversy over Yoon first emerged, there were many calls for caution, but recently, as allegations related to the Anseong shelter and real estate surfaced, the internal atmosphere at the Blue House has rapidly deteriorated.

Meanwhile, as the Blue House appears to be distancing itself excessively from this incident, there are also criticisms that it may not sympathize with the issues raised by Grandmother Lee Yong-soo and others. If actual embezzlement and misappropriation occurred, the direct victims would ultimately be the comfort women survivors, yet the Blue House is showing an overly passive stance. A key Blue House official told reporters the day before, "This issue has nothing to do with the current or future state affairs the Blue House is handling," and added, "I hope people stop trying to drag the Blue House into this."
