Yoon Mi-hyang, Absence from First-Term Lawmakers' Workshop and Cancellation of Foreign Press Conference
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Yoon Mi-hyang, the elected member of the Democratic Party of Korea, has not appeared in public. However, she reportedly visited Grandma Lee Yong-soo to apologize, and the grandmother shed tears saying she felt "pitiful."
On the morning of the 20th, Yoon did not attend the orientation session for first-term lawmakers held at the National Assembly Memorial Hall. The event, organized by the National Assembly Secretariat, included legislative activity training and a luncheon with Speaker Moon Hee-sang.
Additionally, a briefing invited by the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' Club scheduled for that day was canceled the previous day at the request of the Justice and Memory Foundation (Jeonguiyeon). Yoon had planned to attend with Lee Na-young, the chairperson of Jeonguiyeon, to clarify related suspicions.
Yoon has also suspended her SNS activities, which she used as a channel to explain the allegations, since the 13th.
However, a media outlet reported that Yoon knelt down and apologized to Grandma Lee Yong-soo, who had raised suspicions against her. The grandmother reportedly cried, saying "pitiful," and told Yoon, "I will hold a press conference soon, so come to Daegu then."
The Democratic Party reaffirmed its position that "fact-checking comes first" regarding the suspicions surrounding Yoon.
Kang Hoon-sik, the senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, stated at a briefing following the Supreme Council meeting that morning, "Regarding the allegations of accounting fraud at Jeonguiyeon, the party's position is that fact verification must come first."
