Gwanak-gu, Pilot Installation of Automatically Opening and Closing ‘Gang Gam-chan Smart Shade’
A smart shade that automatically opens and closes based on surrounding conditions like temperature, wind, and sunlight... Enables quick emergency response via remote control, displays LED panel advertisements, and serves as a security light at night
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is piloting the installation of the ‘Gang Gamchan Smart Shade’ that automatically opens and closes based on surrounding environmental analysis using 4th industrial technology (IOT) to prepare for summer heatwaves.
Since 2017, the district has annually added shades that provide shelter from the hot summer sun at crosswalks, bus stops, and traffic islands with heavy pedestrian traffic, currently operating a total of 35 foldable shades.
Especially this year, with a budget of about 100 million KRW, 10 Gang Gamchan Smart Shades incorporating IoT and solar power technology will be newly installed at locations with high foot traffic: ▲in front of Gwanak-gu Office (3 locations) ▲Seoul National University Station (4 locations) ▲Sillim Station (2 locations) ▲Sadang Station (1 location), and will be provided as resting spots for residents exhausted by the heat until October.
The ‘Gang Gamchan Smart Shade’ is an eco-friendly clean energy facility equipped with a solar power supply device that requires no special maintenance costs and automatically opens and closes in response to surrounding environmental factors such as temperature, wind, and sunlight.
It automatically opens when the temperature is above 20℃ or wind speed is below 7 m/s, and automatically closes when wind speed exceeds 7 m/s, temperature falls below 15℃, or after sunset when it becomes dark.
Remote control is also possible, which is an advantage over foldable shades that had difficulty responding quickly to emergencies such as typhoons and gusts due to the absence of constant management personnel and increasing number of locations, allowing rapid response to unexpected disaster situations.
Additionally, it stores solar energy during the day and can serve as a security light at night with lighting installed on the shade, and promotional effects can be enhanced through posting district promotional materials using LED light panels.
The district plans to replace all existing foldable shades with smart shades after analyzing operational effectiveness and securing budgets such as special grants.
