"Insurance Tips for Those in Urgent Need of Cash! Daily Wage Bait Insurance Scam Alert Issued"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Recently, cases of recruiting insurance fraud conspirators using high daily wages as bait or encouraging insurance fraud by promoting 'insurance tips' to receive larger insurance payouts have increased, prompting a consumer alert.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) on the 19th, there has been a rise in content that recruits automobile insurance fraud conspirators by disguising advertisements such as 'job seekers or those in urgent need of cash' and 'high daily wages paid' on online services like internet cafes, Facebook, and Twitter. These contents also mislead people by promoting 'insurance tips' to receive larger insurance payouts, inducing them to undergo specific treatments or diagnoses, or falsely claiming that plastic surgery can be covered by indemnity insurance.
An FSS official stated, "There is a possibility that teenagers and young adults with little social experience or criminal awareness, as well as low-income groups suffering economic difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, may become involved in insurance fraud without even realizing it, lured by bait such as urgent cash or high daily wages." The official added, "Especially, the complacent thought of 'everyone else is doing it' combined with the characteristics of online services raises concerns that such fraud could spread quickly and easily to an unspecified large number of people."
In actual cases of insurance fraud executed through recruiting conspirators, some people contacted after seeing advertisements like 'Contact if you need urgent cash' or 'Daily wage 250,000 KRW+' were deceived with promises that they could easily earn money by intentionally causing traffic accidents and were then involved in the fraud. There were also cases where people responded to posts such as 'Looking for ㄷㅋ (rear-end collision)' and conspired with anonymous individuals to cause intentional contact accidents, then received pre-agreed payments or claimed insurance money.
Regarding cases of executing insurance fraud by encouraging and inducing with false information, there were incidents where insurance claims were made by distorting or fabricating accident and treatment details according to methods shown in online videos, such as 'If you receive an OO diagnosis, you can get a nose plastic surgery' or 'You can get vision correction surgery disguised as OOO surgery.' Additionally, there were cases where false medical certificates were obtained from doctors as instructed in online videos like 'How to get a large settlement for a traffic accident' to claim insurance money.
The FSS plans to strengthen monitoring of content that encourages and induces insurance fraud and to intensify planned investigations into insurance fraud.
