Sejong, Fostering a Biomedical Active Material Hub
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City is launching commercialization efforts using biomedical active materials.
On the 19th, the city announced that it signed an agreement for the ‘Establishment of a Biomedical Active Materials Hub’ with the KAIST Biosynthesis Research Group and four bio companies at the Industry-Academia-Research Cluster Support Center.
According to the agreement, the KAIST Biosynthesis Research Group will participate in the ‘Biomedical Active Materials Advancement Project’ jointly with Sejong Technopark, taking on the role of establishing and operating the center.
Each bio company will conduct research in their respective manufacturing areas. Medica Korea Co., Ltd. will handle the manufacturing of specialized pharmaceuticals, Synergy Innovation Co., Ltd. will manufacture microbial culture media, Nutra Pharm Tech Co., Ltd. will produce health functional foods, and ForBio Korea Co., Ltd. will be responsible for pharmaceuticals and material development.
The city plans to grow Sejong into a biomedical active materials industry hub by transferring KAIST’s core technology and attracting anchor companies through this advancement project.
Previously, in May last year, Sejong was selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s ‘2020 Smart Specialization Infrastructure Phase 2 Project.’ As a result, a total of 13.7 billion KRW will be invested to establish a Biomedical Active Materials Center on the second floor of the Industry-Academia-Research Cluster Support Center.
Biomedical active materials are new materials that increase added value by processing, fermenting, and synthesizing natural compounds derived from natural organisms to supply nutrients necessary for the human body and to prevent and treat diseases.
