16 Seoul Air Pollutant Emission Sites Reduce Pollutants by 46% Over 4 Months
Poetry and Voluntary Agreements... Reduced Emissions by 93t During Seasonal Management Period
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Air pollutant emission sites that signed an agreement with Seoul City to reduce fine dust have reduced pollutant emissions by about 46% during the 'Fine Dust Seasonal Management Period.'
Seoul City announced on the 17th that the amount of air pollutants emitted from 16 incineration facilities and Type 1 to 3 air pollutant emission sites that voluntarily signed the agreement to prepare and implement pollutant reduction measures was 109 tons from December last year to March this year. This is 93 tons, about 46%, less than the 202 tons emitted during the same period last year.
The participating sites in the agreement include Korea District Heating Corporation (Central Branch, Gangnam Branch), Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. Seoul Power Headquarters, Seonam Environment Co., Ltd., Tancheon Environment Co., Ltd., Seoul Asan Medical Center, Korea Veterans Welfare Medical Service Central Veterans Hospital, Hotel Lotte Co., Ltd., Able Hyundai Banyan Tree Hotel, Ewha Womans University, Daesung Industry Co., Ltd., Seobu TND Co., Ltd., Gangnam Financial Center Co., Ltd., Mapo Resource Recovery Facility, Eunpyeong Environmental Plant, and CJ CheilJedang Yeongdeungpo Plant.
Seoul City initially set a goal for these sites to reduce pollutant emissions by 27 tons during the Fine Dust Seasonal Management Period through the agreement, but the actual reduction exceeded the target by 240%.
Looking at the emissions by air pollutant, nitrogen oxides, a secondary fine dust precursor, were most reduced by Korea District Heating Corporation (Central and Gangnam Branches) by 74 tons (57%), followed by Mapo Resource Recovery Facility 26% (5.8 tons), Tancheon Environment 39% (4.9 tons), Seonam Environment 30% (1.4 tons), Daesung Industry 41% (1.3 tons), and Ewha Womans University 40% (1.2 tons).
For sulfur oxides, another secondary precursor, Tancheon Environment reduced emissions by 78% (1 ton), and for dust, CJ CheilJedang Yeongdeungpo Plant reduced emissions by 40% (1.7 tons), the highest reductions respectively.
These sites were able to reduce pollutant emissions by independently preparing and actively implementing reduction measures such as lowering the operating rate of emission facilities, strengthening chemical treatment, early installation of low-NOx burners, and improving operational performance through maintenance of power generation equipment.

The city plans to prepare technical and administrative support measures for participating sites and gradually promote agreements with 30 other Type 1 to 3 air pollutant emission sites in Seoul that did not participate in the previous agreement.
