Potters Correct Japanese-Style Construction Terms
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] ‘Gongguri → Concrete, Nori → Slope’. Korea Expressway Corporation is correcting the Japanese-style road and construction terms that have been conventionally used.
Korea Expressway Corporation announced on the 15th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Institute of the Korean Language on the 14th to create an easy and correct language culture in the road and construction fields.
The two organizations agreed to improve the Japanese-style terms conventionally used in the road and construction fields and the indiscriminately overused loanwords, and to create a desirable language use environment.
The detailed agreement includes creating a proper language use environment in the road and construction fields, building resources for the standardization of technical terms in the road and construction fields, and other cooperation related to establishing an easy and correct language culture.
To this end, Korea Expressway Corporation plans to discover terms that need to be refined, such as Japanese-style terms remaining on site or terms used in highway-related manuals, and promote standardization work in related fields together with the National Institute of the Korean Language.
The existing and new refined term standards will be announced as administrative rules after going through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Technical Term Standardization Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Korean Language Deliberation Committee. Based on the standardized technical terms, highway-related manuals and design documents will also be revised.
