On the 14th, Jeonbuk Province and Gunsan City signed a "Business Agreement to Support the Industry Transition of Shipbuilding Equipment Companies to Renewable Energy" at the Jeonbuk Provincial Government's medium conference room, reaffirming their mutual cooperation to transition and grow shipbuilding equipment companies in the province into the renewable energy sector.
Attending the agreement ceremony were Song Ha-jin, Governor of Jeonbuk Province; Kang Im-jun, Mayor of Gunsan; Kim Kwang-jung, Chairman of the Gunsan Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Business Cooperative; Kwon Chang-ho, Head of the Jeonbuk Regional Headquarters of Korea Land and Housing Corporation; Lee Byung-pil, Head of the Jeonbuk Western Branch of the Small and Medium Business Corporation; and Kim Heung-chul, Head of the Jeonbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.
This agreement is significant in that it lays a solid foundation for the industry transition of shipbuilding equipment companies to renewable energy, improves the region's industrial structure that is dependent on large corporations, strengthens self-sustaining capabilities, and supports a new leap forward.
According to the agreement, Jeonbuk Province and Gunsan City will support the budget and various administrative matters necessary for the industry transition project, while the Gunsan Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Business Cooperative will undertake the establishment of factories and equipment for the industry transition, develop design technologies for wind power substructures and floating solar photovoltaic structures, and create new jobs.
Additionally, the Small and Medium Business Corporation will be responsible for financial support and customized linkage support such as the Corporate Workforce Difficulty Center, while the Korea Land and Housing Corporation and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation will handle administrative support such as leasing and occupancy in national industrial complexes.
The support project for the industry transition of shipbuilding equipment companies to renewable energy focuses on establishing a cooperative factory and equipment for processing and manufacturing offshore wind power substructures and solar photovoltaic structures within the Gunsan 2 National Industrial Complex from this year until 2022.
Through the cooperative factory, it is analyzed that the renewable energy industry will be revitalized based on the technological capabilities possessed by shipbuilding equipment companies, resulting in an employment inducement effect of about 320 related personnel.
Jeonbuk Province is accelerating the creation of GW-class offshore wind power complexes near Gunsan and in the southwestern region to secure a leading position in the offshore wind power industry, as well as fostering related industries including the Saemangeum Renewable Energy Cluster.
Through this industry transition of shipbuilding equipment companies, synergy effects are expected with the renewable energy projects strategically promoted by Jeonbuk Province, and an environment for the independence and sustainable growth of the local shipbuilding industry is also anticipated to be established.
Governor Song Ha-jin said, "The excellent technology and experience accumulated so far can be expanded into the field of renewable energy structure manufacturing to strengthen the self-sustainability of companies," and added, "I hope you will become a leader in Korea's renewable energy industry and lead the overcoming of the economic crisis and the leap of Jeonbuk."
Mayor Kang Im-jun of Gunsan said, "A crisis is an opportunity and a hope for a new beginning, and the transition of Gunsan's shipbuilding industry to renewable energy will provide a chance for a new industrial leap and become a new growth engine for industrial complexes linked to local industries," and stated, "Gunsan City will do its best to support the necessary budget and various administrative supports with Jeonbuk Province."
