Professor Jeong Kyung-shim of Dongyang University, First Trial Today in Non-Detained Status
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Sung-pil] Jung Kyung-shim, a professor at Dongyang University and wife of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, will attend her first trial without detention after being released on the 14th.
The Criminal Division 25-2 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lim Jeong-yeop) will hold a continuation hearing at 10 a.m. on the same day for Professor Jung, who is charged with violating the Capital Markets and Financial Investment Business Act, among other charges.
Professor Jung will appear in court without detention for the first time since she was indicted and detained on November 11 last year on charges related to her children's admission fraud and private equity fund suspicions.
This follows the court's decision on the 8th not to issue an additional arrest warrant, stating that "there is no risk of flight and little possibility of evidence tampering."
Professor Jung was released from Seoul Detention Center around midnight on the 10th. Since she was released due to the expiration of the detention period rather than conditional bail, she is expected to actively exercise her right to defense by freely contacting her lawyers and others.
However, the court plans to notify Professor Jung's side during the hearing that an additional arrest warrant may be issued if there is any attempt to tamper with evidence or flee in the future.
Three witnesses, including a hotel official from Busan where Professor Jung's daughter Cho Min interned, are scheduled to appear at the trial on the same day.
