[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The long-awaited project to install an elevator at the entrance of Kkachisan Station, a wish of the residents of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, finally began construction after selecting a construction company at the end of April.
Kkachisan Station, used by an average of 60,000 people daily, is a subway station and transfer station where Subway Line 2 Sinjeong Branch and Line 5 intersect. Since its opening in March 1996, there has been no elevator from the ground to the underground, making subway use difficult for transportation-vulnerable groups, which has been a consistent point of criticism and complaints.
The elevator to be installed this time will be located near Exit 2 of Kkachisan Station on Line 5. A total budget of 1.5 billion KRW, secured through a city council member's proposed project, will be invested, aiming for completion in October 2021.

Park Sang-gu, a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council's Urban Planning and Management Committee representing Gangseo-gu (Democratic Party, Gangseo 1), said, “I am very pleased to finally resolve the residents' 24-year-long wish. Once the elevator is installed, it is expected to greatly improve the walking environment and accessibility to the platform for transportation-vulnerable groups such as the disabled, elderly, and children.” He added, “In the future, this will help revitalize the area in connection with the National Assembly-daero Upper Park Development Project.”
