[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 12th that it will establish specialized business sites in two regions: Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in collaboration with the Comprehensive Support Center for Disabled Entrepreneurs.

These specialized business sites were prepared based on applications from local governments to support family startups of people with developmental disabilities. The sites are equipped with facilities for startup education (theory and practice), field experience (production, processing, and sales), and startup incubation spaces.

The specialized business site project for family startups of people with developmental disabilities was introduced as a pilot project this year. It was promoted through about nine months of preparation, including selecting industries suitable for startups by people with developmental disabilities such as smart farms, drones, bio (food), and grain processing, analyzing business feasibility, establishing job environments, and local government promotions.

Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, selected for this pilot project, will establish a specialized business site related to the social integration-type smart farm complex project on approximately 16,000㎡ of land. It plans to support technology research and commercialization in cooperation with related local institutions such as Gwangju Technopark, Gwangju Agricultural Technology Center, and Nano Bio Center.

Andong-si, Gyeongbuk, will utilize a building of about 485㎡ to establish a specialized business site for slow food (eco-friendly agricultural product cultivation and production). It plans to support startups through cooperation with related local institutions such as the Gyeongbuk Bio Industry Research Institute, Andong University, and Andong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and Andong-si, Gyeongbuk, plan to start facility design within this month and open the sites by the end of September. The resident startup companies will receive startup training for one year. After starting their businesses, they will receive support for facility use and startup space provision for up to two years.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups expects that by nurturing 10 startup founders per specialized business site through the pilot establishment of family startup specialized business sites for people with developmental disabilities, 20 startup founders and 40 jobs will be created annually in the future.

Kwon Daesu, Director of Small Business Policy at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, said, "From next year, we plan to gradually expand the family startup specialized business sites for people with developmental disabilities to local governments nationwide," adding, "The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and local governments will work together to ensure that these specialized business sites become forward bases for creating new businesses using 4th industrial technologies in disabled enterprises."
