Increase in Sales of Books and Experience Products for Toddler Homeschooling Amid COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), books and experiential products for early childhood homeschooling are gaining popularity.
On the 12th, eBay Korea analyzed sales data of homeschooling products from January to April on Gmarket and Auction, which it operates, revealing that the total transaction amount increased more than threefold (214%) compared to the same period last year. During the same period, the number of applications for 'online educational experiential products' surged sevenfold (601%) compared to the previous year.
Book products saw high demand for Korean and English books for young children, with essential recommended children's books increasing fivefold (404%) and early childhood homeschooling books increasing more than threefold (248%).
In particular, as the homeschooling period lengthened due to COVID-19, application rates for online educational products such as 'Cheonjae Education MilkT,' 'Ice Cream Home Run,' 'NE i-Challenge,' and 'Woongjin Smart All' were high. Popular early childhood homeschooling books included i-Challenge, Seol Min-seok Korean History, and Nobuyeong.
Accordingly, Gmarket and Auction are holding special exhibitions to assist homeschooling. First, Gmarket is offering special discounts on early childhood books through the 'What to Read Today' exhibition, including bestsellers of reference books by grade level and group purchase formats. Free trial products such as 'Ice Cream Home Run' and 'Cheonjae Education MilkT' are also available. Discount benefits are provided as well, including a '15% coupon' for products participating in events with eight major card companies.
Auction is presenting carefully selected best products by age and theme through the 'Mom's Choice' promotion. Study reference books, children's picture books, sound books, and worksheets are sold at discounts of up to 52%. From the 'Tulip Sound Book,' which helps the audiovisual development of children aged 0-3, to the 'Borim Pop-up Picture Book,' which stimulates children's curiosity and imagination, products are prepared at discounted prices.
