[Product Review] Competing with a Rich Flavor... Homeplus's No.1 Milk Is
Homeplus Signature 1A Milk Original Milk
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] The weight gained from staying at home and working remotely, which continued day after day until recently. These days, people are feeling the need to manage their body shape in preparation for the upcoming summer and to regain control over weight management that was somewhat neglected due to a relaxed lifestyle pattern. During a time when immunity is more important than ever, it is impossible to do a diet by simply starving oneself, so milk, which can also take care of health, becomes the first choice.
On the afternoon of the 9th, I visited Homeplus Goyang Terminal branch. There were many types of milk, from the most commonly seen Maeil Milk, Seoul Milk, to newly launched brand milks. Additionally, with the addition of functions such as low-fat, high-calcium, and calcium milk for bones, the choices have become more segmented, making it harder for consumers to decide. Homeplus’s private brand (PB) Signature series also caught my eye. I recalled the high satisfaction I had after purchasing a Signature product.
The newly tried 'Homeplus Signature 1A Milk' Original. Since it was my first attempt, I purchased a small 1L size. For those on a diet or considering functionality, there is also a low-fat high-calcium milk option, but personally, I do not prefer it due to its bland taste. Looking at the nutritional content, it contains 700 calories (Kcal) per 1L, with fat content at 4g per 100ml (7% of the daily nutritional reference intake), which is similar to existing products. Research on milk fat is ongoing, but the academic consensus is that consuming one cup (200ml) per day, less than 10% of the reference intake, is beneficial to health.
How about the taste? The first taste was richer with the savory flavor and aroma of milk, without any fishy or off-flavors. After savoring it several times, the mid-palate felt a bit heavier. However, the finish had a slightly astringent sensation. Unlike some PB brand milks that taste diluted as if mixed with water, this had an impressive flavor.
In fact, this product is a Homeplus million-seller and the number one product in the entire milk category. It is a collaboration between the distributor Homeplus and the manufacturer Yonsei Milk. It is supplied from 119 carefully selected exclusive farms and uses only 1A grade milk. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ milk grading standards, 1A grade applies only to milk with bacterial counts below 30,000 per 1ml. Additionally, the ‘RT (Rich Taste) method’ developed by the Food Science Committee composed of professors from Yonsei University’s medical, life sciences, and food nutrition departments was applied. It has also received the now-standard HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certification.
Cost-effectiveness is also an advantage. Homeplus Signature 1A Milk is priced at 1,990 KRW for a 1L product, which shows a price difference of at least 100 to over 1,000 KRW compared to other brands of the same grade and volume. The large 2.3L size is priced at 4,480 KRW.
