More than 10 Golden Caves Discovered in Hwanggeum-ri, Bugwi-myeon, Jinan
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Go Dal-young] Jinangun announced on the 8th that the Bugi-myeon Residents' Autonomy Committee (Chairman Lee Seok-geun) discovered about 10 Hwanggeum caves.
First, during the exploration of ‘Dokjingigol’ on the mountain behind Banggak Village in Hwanggeum-ri, Mr. Kim Jong-il (73), who inherited the method of harvesting medicinal herbs from his father, recalled and was able to identify and maintain four locations.
The caves appear to have been created solely by manual labor during the Japanese colonial period, and the trails show traces of vehicle use after liberation due to logging, allowing for smooth passage.
They mainly drilled in rocky areas; the entrances are about 2m high, 3 to 4m wide, and although mostly filled in, some parts are 2 to 3m deep, with clear water over 1m deep pooled on the floor in some places.
Additionally, traces of gold mining were found at Jungminnal, Junggogaegil, under Julbawi behind Jinsang Village, and at the entrance of Hwanggeum Waterfall.

Chairman Lee Seok-geun, who supervised the exploration work, said, “I am glad to have found the Hwanggeum caves worthy of the Hwanggeum-ri name and to hear the stories passed down.” He added, “It would be great to develop the caves where gold was mined into a trail like a walking path for tourists visiting Unjangsan and Maisan, turning it into a tourism product.”
