Hyundai Kia Motors and Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion Collaborate to Foster Open Source Software Ecosystem
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Kia Motors is joining hands with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) to innovate the open-source software ecosystem in the automotive manufacturing sector.
On the 8th, Hyundai Kia Motors announced that it signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Open-Source Software Management' with NIPA, aiming to support the use of open-source software and establish a supply chain management system to strengthen the global competitiveness of the domestic automotive manufacturing sector.
This MOU comes as the convergence of automobiles and ICT accelerates, increasing the importance of software in various areas such as infotainment, integrated control of electronic components, external linkage, and communication, thereby emphasizing the significance of managing open-source software.
For parts suppliers developing new specifications, it is essential to determine whether open-source software is used within vehicles and services, assess licenses, and complete verification to comply with license restrictions and obligations, making the purchase of open-source verification tools and related training indispensable.
In this context, Hyundai Kia Motors and NIPA will establish an open-source software supply chain management system to reduce the burden on suppliers and strengthen win-win cooperation by supporting license verification services for open-source compliance, fostering future automotive technology developers through specialized training cooperation, and more.
Through this MOU, Hyundai Kia Motors will lead open-source management in the automotive manufacturing sector by extending management policies related to open-source software included in vehicles to its suppliers. The company plans to set standards for open-source software supplied by partners, inform them of the latest technologies and trends in the automotive manufacturing sector, and promote awareness activities regarding open-source software. NIPA will be responsible for providing open-source license verification services to suppliers, establishing management systems, and supporting expert training.
