US Establishes Cooperation Rules with Huawei on '5G Standards'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The United States, which had designated Huawei, the world's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, as a 'blacklist' and imposed sanctions, has taken a step back to allow cooperation between domestic companies and Huawei on 5th generation (5G) technology standards. This comes amid criticism that the US sanctions on Huawei actually delayed the technological advancement of its own companies.
According to major foreign media on the 6th (local time), the US Department of Commerce is reportedly discussing a plan to allow domestic companies to cooperate with the Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei on 'technology standards' related to 5G networks.
Previously, the Trump administration placed Huawei on the 'blacklist' in May last year citing national security reasons, and imposed regulations requiring US companies to obtain prior approval before conducting business with Huawei.
The new regulation under discussion centers on allowing US technology companies to participate in technology standards organizations in which Huawei is involved. The US Department of Commerce is currently said to be in the final review stage.
This discussion began amid criticism that the US government's sanctions on Huawei for national security reasons have instead caused US companies to fall behind in 5G technology standards.
