LG Uplus Operates Autonomous Night Shuttle in Siheung Baegot New Town
Late-night Shuttle Service Operated on the Route Connecting Oido Station and Jeongwang-dong Residential Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG Uplus is operating the autonomous driving late-night shuttle service ‘Majung’ during late-night hours in Baegot New Town, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do.
According to LG Uplus on the 7th, considering the significant inconvenience to residents due to short operation times and long intervals between buses on public transportation routes between Oido Station and Baegot-dong, this service was planned. Accordingly, it is expected to expand citizen safety and convenience by ▲eliminating public transportation blind spots ▲placing stops within walking distance of residential areas ▲ensuring driving stability.
For this pilot project, LG Uplus provides a 5G-based autonomous driving control platform and vehicle-road infrastructure communication services. Seoul National University supplies autonomous vehicle driving algorithms, and Automos is responsible for autonomous vehicle manufacturing and service operation. Initially, the pilot service will operate on one route from Line 4 Oido Station to the residential area of Jeongwang-dong until October this year, and depending on business performance, it will expand to a total of five routes with eight shuttle vehicles by the end of next year.
Earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a public contest for ‘Autonomous Driving Mobility Service Pilot Operators’ starting in March. LG Uplus formed an industry-academic consortium with Seoul National University and Automos and planned a business model and promotion strategy under the theme ‘Late-night Safe Return Shuttle.’ It received the highest scores in evaluation categories such as business understanding, promotion strategy, and expected effects. It was selected as a pilot operator due to its high innovation in operating late-night autonomous driving services.
