Korea GM's April Domestic Sales Increase by 4%... 'New Car Effect' Overcoming COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Despite the consumption contraction caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Korea GM achieved a 4% increase in sales in the domestic market compared to the previous year.
Korea GM announced on the 6th that it sold 6,706 units in the domestic market in April this year, a 4.2% increase compared to the same period last year. The Chevrolet Spark and Trailblazer led the overall domestic sales performance, selling 2,131 units and 1,757 units respectively.
In particular, the Chevrolet Trailblazer was exported 11,762 units globally in April alone, recording a cumulative export performance of over 50,000 units since the start of shipments. This has played a key role in the company’s business normalization.
The Trailblazer has sparked explosive responses not only in the domestic market but also in the global market with its stylish design, spacious interior, advanced safety features, and premium convenience devices.
The American authentic pickup truck, Colorado, continued its strong performance by selling 394 units in April. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) statistics, Colorado ranked third in best-selling imported cars in the first quarter of this year.
Sales of recreational vehicles (RVs) also more than doubled compared to the same month last year, recently boosted by the addition of Chevrolet Trailblazer and Traverse. The monthly domestic sales volume of Chevrolet imported models such as Camaro SS, Bolt EV, Equinox, Traverse, and Colorado has recorded over 1,000 units for seven consecutive months.
Meanwhile, Korea GM’s exports recorded 22,043 units, a 32.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Although the export decline of RVs (-13%) was reduced due to Trailblazer exports, exports of compact and mid-to-large passenger cars fell to less than half compared to the same period last year, continuing a sluggish trend.
