Guro-gu Intensively Manages Rainwater Drains to Prevent Flood Damage
Thorough Cleaning of 21,548 Sites in the Area by the 15th... Removing Rubber Mats and Sediments... Designation of Managers Including Residents and Officials for Regular Inspections... Operation of 'Cover Collection Day' on the 4th of Every Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) has launched an intensive management campaign for storm drains to prevent flood damage.
On the 6th, Guro-gu announced that it is conducting a comprehensive cleaning operation of storm drains to prevent flood damage caused by heavy summer rains in advance.
Storm drains collect rainwater from roads and residential areas and send it to the sewage system. However, they are often covered with rubber mats or clogged with debris such as trash, fallen leaves, and sediment, preventing them from functioning properly.
Accordingly, Guro-gu will carry out a thorough cleaning of 21,548 storm drains in the district by the 15th of this month. Storm drains located along roadsides will be dredged using manpower and machinery, while small-scale storm drains in residential alleys will be cleaned by residents and volunteers in each neighborhood, who will remove covers and collect trash.
Guro-gu plans to complete all work before the start of the rainy season and will continue additional operations targeting areas of concentrated heavy rainfall and locations with frequent complaints.
To strengthen storm drain maintenance, the district will also operate a ‘Storm Drain Manager Designation System.’ Residents and public officials will be appointed as storm drain managers to regularly remove foreign substances and inspect for damage.
Additionally, the 4th of every month will be designated as ‘Storm Drain Cover Collection Day’ to focus on collecting unauthorized rubber mats and floor coverings.
By the 8th of this month, Guro-gu will also inspect sewage facilities around large construction sites. Officials will visit 13 construction sites in the district to check ▲whether flood prevention measures have been established ▲the adequacy of public sewage and drainage facility maintenance ▲and whether temporary pipelines have been installed during construction.
