Professor Kwon Oh-min of Gyeongsang National University Awarded the Grand Prize of the 'Wonhyo Academic Award'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Gyeongsang National University announced on the 4th that Professor Kwon Oh-min (photo) of the Department of Philosophy, College of Humanities, was selected as the grand prize winner in the academic category of the '10th Wonhyo Academic Award 2020' chosen by the Wonhyo Academic Award Steering Committee of the Korea Buddhist Promotion Foundation.
The Wonhyo Academic Award Steering Committee selected Professor Kwon, author of “The Thought of Therav?da S?tr?la?a in the Abhidharma School”, as the grand prize winner, and Professor Emeritus Park Kyung-jun of Dongguk University, author of “Theory and Practice of the Socialization of Buddhist Studies”, as the special prize winner. The prize money is 20 million KRW for the grand prize and 10 million KRW for the special prize.
The committee stated, "Professor Kwon not only systematically organized the thought of Therav?da S?tr?la?a but also presented an important model in the philological and intellectual history research of Buddhist philosophy," and "we highly evaluated his meaningful contribution to Buddhist studies."
Therav?da S?tr?la?a was a patriarch of the Abhidharma school, one of the four major schools of Indian Buddhism, but a lost logician in history. This book systematically collected fragments of Therav?da doctrines criticized in the literature of other Buddhist schools and was selected last year as a Sejong Book (an excellent academic book by the Korea Publication Culture Promotion Agency).

The Wonhyo Academic Award is a Buddhist-related academic award presented by the Korea Buddhist Promotion Foundation. Since 2010, it has encouraged researchers of Buddhist thought who strive for Buddhist perspectives on modern society and culture and the globalization of Korean philosophy in fields such as humanities and social sciences.
