President Moon to Appoint Ko Ki-young as New Deputy Minister of Justice
From Seoul Eastern District Prosecutor to Deputy Minister of Justice... Kim Osu, Deputy Minister of Justice, Considered for Minister-Level Senior Position
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in is set to appoint Ko Ki-young, Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office (Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 23, age 55), as the new Deputy Minister of Justice. The Blue House announced only a one-point personnel change regarding the Deputy Minister of Justice. It is known that Kim Oh-soo, the current Deputy Minister of Justice (Class 20, age 57), will move to a ministerial-level position.
Kang Min-seok, spokesperson for the Blue House, stated on the 27th, "Ko Ki-young, the new Deputy Minister of Justice, is a former prosecutor with quick and accurate judgment as well as stable organizational management skills," adding, "He has also served as Director of the Crime Prevention Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Justice, and is highly regarded for his understanding of the Ministry's work."
The new Deputy Minister Ko was born in 1965 and graduated from Gwangju Inseong High School and Seoul National University School of Law. He rose to the Deputy Minister position after serving as Head of the Violent Crimes Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Chief Prosecutor of the Busan District Prosecutors' Office, and Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office. His father-in-law is Jeong Jong-deuk, former Mayor of Mokpo from the Democratic Party. Following Deputy Minister Kim, President Moon has appointed another person from the Honam region to the Deputy Minister of Justice position.
Spokesperson Kang said, "We expect (the new Deputy Minister Ko) to contribute to the completion of justice and prosecution reform, as well as the establishment of the rule of law where justice and human rights are respected."

Deputy Minister Kim played a key role in the Moon Jae-in administration's core national agenda of 'prosecution reform' by serving as acting Minister during the resignation process of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk.
