Electronics Industry Sees Surge in Sterilization Appliances Due to COVID-19: "Capturing Consumer Hygiene"

Emphasizing 99.9% Harmful Bacteria Removal Function
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Due to increased consumer interest in hygiene amid the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), sterilization home appliances are gaining popularity.
According to the industry on the 25th, Samsung Electronics saw double-digit growth in sales of clothing care appliances in the first quarter (January to March). In particular, the Samsung Grande AI dryer and washing machine sold 30,000 and 20,000 units respectively within about two months of their release. Cumulatively in the first quarter, sales of both washing machines and dryers increased by approximately 60% compared to the same period last year.
Samsung Electronics explained that the Grande AI dryer's 'Air Sterilization+' function can remove 99.9% of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus from clothes. It can also completely eliminate dust mites inside blankets.
The AirDresser, a clothing care device, also saw sales increase by more than 50% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. It has been certified for its ability to eradicate dust mites and remove mold and allergy-causing bacteria.
LG Electronics introduced the Tromm dryer 'Steam ThinQ' last month, featuring deodorizing and sterilizing functions using TrueSteam. This product has become so popular that it accounts for half of all steam product sales within about a month of its release.
The company explained that according to tests by the Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute, using the dryer's steam sterilization course can remove 99.99% of harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The Styler, which also applies steam technology, saw sales increase by more than 30% in February compared to the same period last year. According to tests by the same institute, LG Electronics emphasized that the hygiene sterilization course removes 99.99% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli. The Dios dishwasher also significantly enhanced cleaning power, hygiene, and convenience by applying TrueSteam.

An industry official said, "Considering the growing interest in hygiene due to the spread of COVID-19, demand for clothing care devices and washing machines with sterilization functions is expected to increase for the time being."
