Deputy Minister Hong Jeong-gi Visits Environmental Industry Research Complex... "Hope Bio Hallyu Wave Spreads"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Hong Jeong-gi, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Environment, visited the Environmental Industry Research Complex located in Seo-gu, Incheon on the 21st to listen to the difficulties faced by tenant companies due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and to review support measures.
About 10 officials attended the meeting, including Yoo Je-cheol, President of the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, and Lee Min-hee (CEO of SB E&E), chairman of the tenant companies' council.
At the meeting, Vice Minister Hong stated, "We hope that the Korean Wave of the life (bio) industry, which is booming with COVID-19 diagnostic kits, will also spread to the environmental industry by achieving innovative growth of environmental companies, and the government will not hesitate to provide necessary support."
The Ministry of Environment is implementing measures such as reducing rent for the research complex and supporting employment of research personnel for tenant companies struggling due to COVID-19.
The rent for the research complex was reduced by 25% from the 5th of last month, and for companies classified as small businesses with five or fewer employees, an additional 25% reduction was temporarily applied for nine months from April 1 to December 31. Labor costs for newly hired research personnel are supported at 1 to 1.3 million KRW per person per month for six months, with 18 companies applying.
Regarding environmental loans, plans include ▲ deferral of principal repayment due this year ▲ additional allocation of loan amounts for 2021 at 200% compared to the previous year ▲ expansion of public procurement of innovative environmental R&D products ▲ and support for COVID-19 litigation consultations.

After the meeting, Vice Minister Hong delivered quarantine supplies such as masks and hand sanitizers necessary for COVID-19 prevention to the tenant companies' council. He then visited two outstanding environmental venture companies to listen to on-site difficulties amid the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and encouraged the officials.
