Hyundai Motor's First Approval for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Export: "A Chance to Lead the US and European Markets"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 20th that it has decided to approve Hyundai Motor Company's technology export of hydrogen fuel cell systems for hydrogen vehicles. With this approval, Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell systems can now be exported to the United States and Europe.
A hydrogen fuel cell system is a device that generates electricity using hydrogen and is a core component of hydrogen vehicles, equivalent to the engine in internal combustion engine vehicles.
Currently, 69 technologies including hydrogen fuel cell systems are designated and managed as national core technologies. To export national core technologies developed with government support overseas, approval must be obtained from the Industrial Technology Protection Committee chaired by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
The committee approved two cases of Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell system technology exports to the United States and Europe. This is the first case of exporting hydrogen fuel cell systems alone, not hydrogen vehicles. The decision to approve the technology export was made after comprehensively considering the possibility of technology leakage and the impact on the national economy.
The design and manufacturing technology of hydrogen fuel cell systems is advanced core technology possessed by only a few companies such as Hyundai and Toyota. As demand for hydrogen vehicles is expected to surge in the future, the technological and economic value is very high.
In particular, through the approval of technology export to the United States, Hyundai will be able to supply core hydrogen vehicle components to the North American commercial vehicle market by utilizing its hydrogen fuel cell system and the drive system technology of Cummins in the United States.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy expressed expectations, saying, "This will secure a foothold to preoccupy and expand the growing U.S. fuel cell market, and domestic parts companies will be able to grow together."
The export agenda for hydrogen fuel cells to European automaker A was also approved, providing Hyundai with an opportunity to preoccupy the European hydrogen fuel cell market.
