Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok Pays Tribute at Jindo Port on the 6th Anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok laid flowers at Jindo Port on the afternoon of the 14th to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, remembering the pain of the victims and expressing the hope that the residents will be safe and happy.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 14th, Governor Kim said, “I once again thank the people of Jindo County who worked hard to help the bereaved families, putting aside their livelihoods due to the Sewol Ferry disaster at Jindo Port,” and urged, “Jindo County officials should do their best to ensure that the bereaved families remaining at the 4·16 family facilities heal quickly and return to their daily lives.”
He also said, “To prevent marine safety accidents like the Sewol Ferry disaster from happening again, we will strengthen marine safety accident prevention education and response training, and ensure that the National Marine Safety Center, a safety experience facility, is completed without delay.”
Currently, Jeonnam Province has installed a large banner on the outer wall of the government office building to commemorate the 6th anniversary, and installed 304 pinwheels in the garden in front of the south gate of the provincial office to remember the 304 victims.
During the memorial period, all employees held a moment of silence to mourn the victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
In addition, the 4·16 Sewol Family Council and the foundation plan to hold a simplified memorial ceremony on board as an internal event due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the National Marine Safety Center is scheduled to open near Jindo Port in March next year with a national budget investment of 27 billion won, and will include marine safety experience facilities, a youth hostel, a marine safety garden, memorial sculptures, and a 4·16 remembrance space.
