Lee Hae-chan "If you want to overcome COVID-19 well, the Democratic Party must have a 'majority'"
Regarding Hwang Kyo-ahn's 'terror' remark: "Absurd... That's why he doesn't receive public support"
[Asia Economy Reporters Wondara and Jeon Jinyoung] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appealed for the necessity of securing a majority of seats at the final election strategy meeting before the April 15 general election.
On the morning of the 14th, at the joint election strategy committee meeting of the Democratic Party and the Civic Party held at the National Assembly, Lee said, "The Democratic Party and the Civic Party fought against the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and dealt with the economic crisis together with the Moon Jae-in administration during this election," adding, "If you hope that the Moon Jae-in government will successfully overcome COVID-19, the National Assembly must be stable and able to work properly."
He continued, "Our party requested the convening of an extraordinary session of the National Assembly the day after the election to provide 100% of the promised emergency disaster relief funds, but the United Future Party, which argued about giving 500,000 won or spending 100 trillion won, is already looking for excuses to obstruct by opposing the supplementary budget that involves borrowing," he pointed out. He also strongly criticized, "Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the United Future Party, said on the last day before the election that this government might even commit terrorism. Terrorism is something that was done in the old days under Jeon Du-hwan and Park Chung-hee. It is absurd," adding, "That is why they do not receive public support."
Lee said, "The 21st National Assembly will be qualitatively different from the 20th National Assembly," and emphasized, "If the Democratic Party and the Civic Party cooperate to form the largest party in the National Assembly and a majority, it will be difficult for the opposition to obstruct. A very good parliamentary environment can be created where reform tasks can be carefully reviewed and handled step by step."
He added, "However, the election situation is still difficult to predict the outcome," saying, "In the metropolitan area, Chungcheong, and Gangwon, more than half of the constituencies are still in close competition, and in Yeongnam, we are fighting hard in more than 10 places, but the result cannot be guaranteed until the ballot boxes are opened. Although Honam seems favorable at a glance, it is facing fierce pursuit in many places."
Regarding proportional representation parties, he said, "Votes supporting the Moon Jae-in government are split, so difficulties still persist," emphasizing, "For the Democratic Party to become the largest party and aim for a majority, the Civic Party must surpass the Future Korea Party and win first place in proportional votes."
