"'n번방 Citizen Crime Prevention Squad' College Student Developers: 'We Will Also Monitor the Trial Process'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] "We will keep the Nth Room case in the spotlight until the perpetrators receive heavy punishment," said Seon Mo (20), the developer of the 'Nth Room Citizen Crime Prevention Squad' website and a student in the Department of Media Studies at Sookmyung Women's University, in a phone interview with Asia Economy on the 3rd.
After the truth of the 'Telegram Nth Room,' which distributed sexual exploitation videos of women including minors, was revealed, Seon and three others?Lee Mo (22) from Hanyang University, Yang Mo (23) from Inha University, and soldier Kim Mo (21)?launched the 'Nth Room Citizen Crime Prevention Squad' website on the 29th of last month. Their goal is to organize and continuously document information about the Nth Room case so that people can easily grasp the situation and maintain public interest. Within just four days of its launch, the site had over 100,000 visitors.
The website neatly organizes information about the Nth Room suspects, including 'Doctor' Jo Joo-bin, the charges applied, and the status of arrests. It also lists derivative chat rooms such as 'Doctor's Room,' 'Gotham Room,' and 'Pacific Expedition Team' created by them. The arrest status is recorded daily through monitoring by the developers. Various Nth Room petitions submitted to the Blue House and the National Assembly, related bills, and the latest news are updated in real time. The site also accepts tips related to sexual exploitation Telegram rooms via the website and email.
Seon said, "So far, many sexual crime cases such as the Gangnam Station hidden camera incident, Soranet, and Burning Sun have occurred, but public interest quickly faded." She added, "I thought the perpetrators received light punishments as the issues were buried, and I developed this because I wanted the perpetrators of the Nth Room case to receive punishments commensurate with their crimes."
She continued, "As a female university student, when I saw the Nth Room case and deepfake pornography posts, I felt a fear of 'Could it be me too?'" She explained, "If the perpetrators are not properly punished for this case, I felt it might happen again."
