Candidate Yoon Young-deok Pays Tribute to 5·18 Democratic Martyrs, Vows to Uphold the 'Spirit of the Martyrs'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Yoon Youngdeok, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for the 4·15 general election in Dong and Nam Districts (Gap), Gwangju Metropolitan City, announced on the 31st that he would pay tribute to the martyrs who participated in the student movement for democratization and inherit their spirit.
On the same day, Candidate Yoon visited the Chosun University Democracy Park and toured the Chosun University Democratization Movement Memorial Tower and the memorial monuments of senior martyrs together with school officials and juniors. Yoon is also a co-author of the "History of the Democratization Movement" recorded at the Chosun University Democratization Movement Memorial Tower.
He then visited the May 18th Cemetery to pay respects at the graves of martyrs Lee Cheolgyu, Ryu Jaeul, Kim Dongsu, Min Simo, Kim Haksoo, and Park Seunghui.
Candidate Yoon said, "In a way, I think joining the student movement when I entered university was a turning point in my life. In May 1980, many people lost their lives because they wanted a better world, and even after 1987, as military dictatorship continued, many people sacrificed themselves and set their lives on fire to convey their will to society."
He continued, "To fulfill the role of a survivor for the better world they hoped for, I decided to visit the Chosun University martyrs who were close to my life. This is to reaffirm the initial purpose I set on the path I am taking and to firmly uphold it."
He also emphasized, "I believe politics is something that every sovereign practices in their own life space. Specifically, institutional politics is the act of elected public officials fulfilling the expectations and demands of those who elected them in their official positions."
