[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The United States has become the country with the highest number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the world.
Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. reported on the evening of the 26th (local time) that there were 82,404 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Previously ranked third the day before, the U.S. surpassed China with 81,782 cases and Italy with 80,589 cases, taking on this unfortunate distinction.
At the beginning of this month, on the 1st, the number of cases in the U.S. was less than 100, but infections have rapidly increased within a month. The trend of new cases shows no signs of slowing down, making the U.S., along with Europe, a key epicenter of COVID-19. The number of deaths from COVID-19 in the U.S. has also exceeded 1,000, reaching 1,128.
By region, New York State has become the center of the outbreak with more than 37,000 cases, but recently, the spread in other areas such as New Jersey and Louisiana has also accelerated.
