[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, will participate as a panelist in a debate on disaster basic income on the 26th.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 25th that Governor Lee Jae-myung will appear as a panelist on MBC's '100-Minute Debate' (Economic Crisis Caused by COVID-19, What Are the Alternatives), which will be held for 100 minutes starting at 11:05 PM on the 26th.
The debate will mainly focus on whether disaster basic income is a solution to overcoming the economic crisis and whether the current government's supplementary budget and second supplementary budget can be measures to overcome the economic recession, conducted in a 2 vs. 2 pro and con panel debate format.
As debaters, on the pro side, Governor Lee Jae-myung and Professor Choi Bae-geun of Konkuk University's Department of Economics will participate, while on the opposing side, Representative Lee Hye-hoon of the United Future Party and Professor Shin Se-don of Sookmyung Women's University's Department of Economics will take part.
In the disaster basic income debate, Governor Lee will candidly share his thoughts on ▲ the first implementation by a metropolitan local government, specific details and methods of funding ▲ comparison between Gyeonggi Province's disaster basic income and the United Future Party's '40 trillion won COVID-19 emergency relief fund (proposal)' ▲ effects of universal versus selective payments, and cash payments versus local currency payments.
Earlier, on the 24th, Governor Lee announced that 13.26 million residents of Gyeonggi Province would receive 100,000 won per person as disaster basic income. This disaster basic income will be provided in the form of Gyeonggi local currency starting April 1 and must be used within three months.
