Baekyangsa Gobulmae in Full Bloom... Spring Atmosphere Fills the Mountain Temple
Natural Monument No. 486 Baekyangsa Gobulmae in Full Bloom
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Young-gyun] These days, when the entire nation is going through a difficult time due to COVID-19, the news of flowers blooming in the southern region is briefly easing worries and providing new vitality.
The Baegyangsa Office of Baegamsa, Naejangsan National Park, under the Korea National Park Service (Director Lee Jeon-ung), announced on the 24th that the Gobulmae (Ancient Buddha Plum) at Baegyangsa Temple in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do, which is one of Korea's four great plum trees and known as one of the five plums (Mae) of Honam, is in full bloom.
The Baegyangsa Gobulmae (Natural Monument No. 486), estimated to be about 350 years old, is one of only four natural monument plum trees in Korea, along with the Yulgokmae (No. 484) at Ojukheon in Gangneung, the Baekmae (No. 485) in front of Gilsangjeon at Hwaeomsa Temple, and the Seonammae (No. 488) at Seonamsa Temple. It is the only red plum blossom among them.
It is also known as one of the five plums of Honam, along with Daemyeongmae at Chonnam National University and Gyedangmae in Jisil Village, Damyang. Although there is only one tree, its scent is subtle and enchanting, filling the entire Baegyangsa temple grounds.
