On the 24th (Korean time), Golf Digest in the United States reported, "The novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is spreading worldwide," and "The Tokyo Olympics scheduled for July will be postponed to next year." Dick Pound (Canada), the longest-serving member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), also stated in an interview with USA Today, "Based on the information collected by the IOC, the decision to postpone has been made," adding, "There are still variables, but the Olympics will not start in July."
Commissioner Pound said, "The IOC will have to deal with the enormous repercussions of postponing the Tokyo Olympics," and added, "It is expected that the next measures will be announced soon." The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9. The Japanese government and the IOC have maintained their stance to proceed with the event as planned, but they have fallen into a dilemma as COVID-19 spreads. Canada and Australia have already declared they will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to concerns over the safety of their athletes.

The women's event is planned to take place from August 6 to 9, one week later. Each country can send two players, but countries with players ranked within the top 15 in the world rankings as of the end of June can send up to four players. At the Rio Olympics in Brazil four years ago, the men's gold medal was won by Justin Rose (England), and the women's gold medal was won by 'Golf Queen' Park In-bi (32, KB Financial Group).
