Adjustment of Primary Election Schedules Due to COVID-19 in a Total of 7 States
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] The state of Indiana in the United States has postponed its presidential primary schedule due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced on the 21st (local time) that he had agreed with both the Democratic and Republican parties to postpone the Indiana presidential primary from May 5 to June 2.
Regarding this, Governor Holcomb explained, "The right of citizens to elect leaders through free and open elections is one of the cornerstones of America," adding, "To balance this right with the safety of public officials, poll workers, and voters, it is appropriate to postpone the Indiana primary."
Governor Holcomb also recommended, together with leaders of both the Democratic and Republican parties, ▲ temporarily suspending absentee voting rules to allow all state residents to vote by mail in the primary ▲ allowing healthcare professionals to serve as travel board members to assist nursing home and hospital patients in voting.
