[Special Stock] Seowon, Concerns Over COVID-19 Airborne Infection... Surging Demand for Antimicrobial Copper to Combat Bacteria
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] As research shows that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can survive up to 3 hours in aerosol form, the antibacterial properties of copper are gaining attention. The copper-related company Seowon is showing strong performance.
As of 2:23 PM on the 18th, Seowon was trading at 2,370 KRW, up 5.33% (120 KRW) compared to the previous trading day.
Concerns are growing that the novel coronavirus can be transmitted not only through contact infection via droplets from infected individuals but also through the air. Aerosols refer to solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. They are typically only 1 μm (one-millionth of a meter) in diameter, much smaller than the droplets produced when coughing or sneezing.
On the 19th of last month, China's National Health Commission announced that the novel coronavirus could potentially be transmitted through aerosols. The study was jointly conducted by researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Princeton University, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Recently, interest in antibacterial copper, which has excellent antibacterial and sterilization functions, has increased due to the COVID-19 issue. Dr. CU has developed and started selling adhesive antibacterial copper films by adding antibacterial copper with 99.9% antibacterial power against super bacteria such as COVID-19 and MERS. The antibacterial copper film is a product that has obtained international certification, domestic patents, and test results, and is known to prevent cross-infection of viruses. The adhesive antibacterial copper film can be applied to all places touched by hands, such as elevator switches, door handles, and touchscreens.
Since its establishment in 1988, Seowon has been leading the material industry in the non-ferrous metals sector. It has acquired certifications such as the KS Mark, Environmental Mark, ISO9001 and ISO14001 for global quality and environmental standards, specialized parts and materials company, innovative small and medium enterprise (INO-BIZ), venture company, and Gyeonggi-do promising small and medium enterprise.
Seowon produces and supplies brass billets, ingots, and copper alloy products, which are essential basic materials in all industrial fields. Seowon's brass ingots are the only KS Mark products in Korea and have a fine microstructure not seen in competitors' products. By developing melting and refining methods that eliminate phenomena weakening product durability, the company produces high-quality products and has secured a stable sales channel in the domestic market.

Seowon is developing environmentally friendly copper alloys that are harmless to humans and the environment to meet the increasing demand for eco-friendly materials in line with social changes such as strengthened environmental regulations, worsening usage conditions, and water pollution. As a measure against resource depletion, it operates a metal resource recycling business for environmental protection and resource recycling through the circular use of urban mines. To locally produce and supply brass ingots, which are in growing demand worldwide, Seowon established an overseas subsidiary, Gaepyeong Daechang Copper Co., Ltd., in China as its overseas production base.
