Criminal compensation is a system where the state compensates the trial costs incurred by a party in a criminal trial when a not guilty verdict is finalized. Former Prime Minister Lee was indicted in July 2015 on charges of receiving money and valuables from the late Sung Wan-jong, former chairman of Kyungnam Enterprises, ahead of the National Assembly by-election, and was acquitted by the Supreme Court in December 2017.
