'Domestic Helicopter' Commemorative Stamp to Be Released
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] A commemorative stamp honoring Surion, Korea's first fixed-wing aircraft (helicopter), will be issued. The Ministry of Science and ICT's Postal Service Headquarters will sell 750,000 commemorative stamps featuring three types of domestically produced helicopters starting from the 20th to celebrate the development of Korea's aviation industry.
The stamps feature three derivative models of the Surion currently used for fire and crime scenes or forest surveillance.
The firefighting helicopter (KUH-1EM) depicts the 'Hallamae' deployed to the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters in May 2018. It is equipped with emergency equipment and a rear water tank. It can perform missions such as search, rescue, emergency patient transport, and fire suppression. In particular, it can hover at altitudes above 2000m, enabling smooth rescue operations even at Baengnokdam, Hallasan, which is 1950m above sea level. With a cruising range of 670km, it can also transport patients to large hospitals in the metropolitan area in case of emergencies.
The police helicopter (KUH-1P), named 'Chamsuri,' has been active in the police aviation unit since 2013. It is equipped with an external auxiliary fuel tank that increases flight distance and time, performing various missions such as integrated defense and anti-terrorism operations, rescue, missing person searches, aerial reconnaissance, and traffic control.
The forest helicopter (KUH-1FS) has been operated by the Korea Forest Service since May 2018. It can fly at speeds up to 240km/h while fully loaded with a 2000L rear water tank. It is equipped with advanced aviation equipment enabling night missions.
