Donation to Be Used for Residents Struggling Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The traditional cultural heritage temple Samcheonsa and the social welfare corporation Indeokwon donated 20 million won in donations to Eunpyeong District Office on the 16th to overcome COVID-19.
Representatives of Samcheonsa and Indeokwon stated the purpose of the donation, saying, "It is the natural duty and purpose of a practitioner to work together to solve suffering (苦) at places where suffering exists, and we participated in the donation with the desire to help even a little."
This warm spirit of sharing from Samcheonsa can be seen in their ongoing efforts to practice Buddhist compassion by supporting neighbors in need within the local community. Samcheonsa, the largest Buddhist welfare temple in Korea, established the social welfare corporation Indeokwon in 1994, through which it has been supporting neighbors in need beyond religious boundaries with compassion and warm sharing.
Indeokwon operates the Eunpyeong Senior Welfare Center and the Eunpyeong District Library, expanding opportunities for various local residents to enjoy welfare and culture, and shares with neighbors in need in the community. It also donates scholarships to the Eunpyeong Residents Scholarship Foundation to support underprivileged students in Eunpyeong District. The donation will be used to help residents struggling due to COVID-19.
Additionally, Samcheonsa has suspended Buddhist ceremonies until the COVID-19 situation ends, and Indeokwon’s affiliated institutions such as the Eunpyeong Senior Welfare Center and Eunpyeong District Library have also closed, actively participating in "social distancing" and leading efforts to overcome COVID-19.
An official from Eunpyeong District said, "With this donation from Samcheonsa, we hope that the warm hearts to overcome COVID-19 together with neighbors in difficulty will spread beyond religion like the clear and fragrant incense of Buddhism, filling our society with compassion."
Support and donations within the local community, expressing the will to overcome COVID-19 together in Eunpyeong District, continue to rise. On the 2nd of this month, Jingwan Methodist Church donated 19 million won, on the 6th Jingwansa Temple donated 10 million won, on the 11th Eunpyeong Meditech High School donated 1.46 million won, and on the 12th Eunkwang Church donated 7 million won.
