Hoban TBM Wins TBM Construction Contract for Section 2 of Line 7 Okjeong Extension Project... Worth 34.3 Billion KRW
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chunhee] Hoban Group's construction affiliate Hoban TBM announced on the 17th that it has won the construction contract for the Gripper TBM (Gripper Tunnel Boring Machine) for Section 2 of the Dobongsan-Okgjeong Metropolitan Railroad.
Section 2 of the Dobongsan-Okgjeong Metropolitan Railroad corresponds to the second of three sections in the Seoul Subway Line 7 extension project, extending from Dobongsan Station in Dobong-gu, Seoul, through Jangam Station in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, to the Okgjeong district in Yangju City. Hoban TBM will carry out the Gripper TBM construction for a length of 3.2 km in this section. The contract amount is 34.3 billion KRW, and the construction period is approximately 54 months after commencement.
TBM refers to an 'advanced tunnel boring machine,' an automated machine that effectively excavates underground spaces using a rotary tunnel boring method instead of the blasting method. TBMs can be custom-made according to their purpose and terrain conditions, and they are highly regarded for being environmentally friendly due to minimal noise and vibration.
Recently, with the construction of transportation infrastructure such as the metropolitan area express railroad (GTX) and the Shinansan Line, which pass through urban areas at depths of 40 meters underground, the use of TBM excavation methods has increased. Unlike the conventional blasting method (NATM) that uses explosives, TBMs produce almost no noise or vibration, making them excellent in terms of environmental and safety aspects, and efficient in urban areas where complaints arise or in safety-critical underwater sections.

A Hoban TBM official stated, "The Gripper TBM method is actively used in Singapore, Europe, and is being considered for various projects domestically as well. Many projects exempt from preliminary feasibility studies are planned to start within this year, so an expansion of TBM construction is expected in the future."
