View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Ryu Hojung, the first proportional representative candidate of the Justice Party who was embroiled in a controversy over proxy gaming in League of Legends (LoL), has been reappointed, while Hwang Heedu, a former professional gamer and member of the Democratic Party's nomination committee, raised the issue again, saying, "This is not a simple childhood incident."
On the morning of the 16th, Commissioner Hwang wrote on his Facebook, "There is growing controversy over the reappointment result of candidate Ryu," adding, "Looking at the result where a candidate who is practically equivalent to a proxy test was reappointed, and only those who did not call proxy drivers were punished, I think this is truly a 'bossy standard.'"
He continued, "If the anger of young and adolescent gamers is perceived as just 'simple jealousy,' it is a big mistake," and "I want to point out first that the proxy gaming incident is not a simple childhood incident."
Commissioner Hwang criticized, "It is such a sensitive issue that there is an underlying perception that if you perform poorly in ranked games, you are a nuisance," and "Candidate Ryu declared that she would represent gamers and IT workers, but it turns out she unfairly profited through proxy gaming in the past and was even caught lying."
He added, "This is a very sensitive issue for young people, and they are still angry at the reality of being treated as 'just a game,'" and "If you fail to recognize that times are changing rapidly, no matter what youth policies you present, you will not gain any sympathy. I hope this incident will change the 'perception of games.'"
Recently, the controversy over candidate Ryu's proxy gaming surfaced mainly in online gaming communities. The suspicion is that in 2014, during her university days, Ryu allowed her boyfriend to use her LoL ID to unfairly inflate her gaming skills.
Although candidate Ryu officially apologized, the controversy continued as suspicions arose that she benefited by listing the rank obtained through proxy gaming on her application to a game company. In response, the Justice Party held a national committee meeting on the 15th, listened to candidate Ryu's explanation regarding the qualification controversy caused by proxy gaming, and decided to reappoint her.
