Trump-Abe Phone Talk... Discussion on COVID-19 and Tokyo Olympics (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Amid the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a telephone conference on the morning of the 13th Korea time, NHK and other broadcasters reported.
According to the report, the conference took place from 9 a.m. for 50 minutes, during which they exchanged views on cooperation measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the economic situation. Prime Minister Abe said that requests to refrain from large-scale events are being made domestically and stated, "We intend to continue responding promptly." President Trump responded, "The United States is also doing its best," NHK reported.
The two leaders also exchanged opinions on the impact on the global economy, which is becoming apparent due to factors such as the sharp decline in stock prices, and on financial measures that both countries should take.
Additionally, discussions were held regarding the Tokyo Olympics. On the 12th U.S. time at the White House, President Trump expressed his personal opinion that postponing the Tokyo Olympics for one year would be better than holding it without spectators.
Prime Minister Abe said during the telephone conference, "We are doing our utmost to hold the Olympics," and President Trump highly appreciated Japan's efforts and agreed to cooperate closely. He requested cooperation regarding the Olympics, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga stated that there was no mention of postponing the Olympics.
