[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] It has been confirmed that the number of 5G mobile communication base stations in Korea has increased more than threefold from the time of commercialization last year, reaching 108,897 stations. The usage conditions for 5G, such as youth plans priced in the 40,000 KRW range, are also being evaluated as improving.
On the 11th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting of the ‘5G Service Inspection Public-Private Joint Task Force’ at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry conference room, with participation from mobile carriers and manufacturers (terminals and equipment), to conduct this inspection.
Based on completion reports, the number of 5G base stations increased from 35,851 stations at the time of commercialization in early April last year to 108,897 stations by the end of last month. As of the end of January, the number of 5G service subscribers was counted at 4.96 million.
Domestic telecom operators plan to continue efforts to improve reception environments targeting major highways, railway stations, large shopping malls, and subways. The terminal manufacturers attending the meeting stated that they will continuously release mid- to low-priced 5G smartphones to expand 5G service usage. Equipment manufacturers plan to supply equipment in accordance with the base station construction schedules of mobile carriers.
