Repeated Infections in Government Sejong Complex Including Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries... 6 COVID-19 Confirmed Officials (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] As government officials at the Government Sejong Complex have been consecutively diagnosed with COVID-19, concerns are rising about the spread of infectious diseases between government ministries and local communities.
According to Sejong City on the 11th, three officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries at the Government Sejong Complex were confirmed positive for COVID-19 on the same day. Including them, the total number of COVID-19 positive officials within the complex is six.
By agency, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has the highest number with four cases, while the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Presidential Archives each have one official confirmed positive for COVID-19.
The city is currently closing and disinfecting the office departments where the confirmed cases belong and conducting COVID-19 infection tests on colleagues of the confirmed officials. Officials who had contact with the confirmed cases are currently under self-quarantine.
The problem lies in the increasing number of confirmed cases among the complex’s officials, raising the possibility of cluster infections within government ministries, and the risk of COVID-19 spreading between the government complex and local communities cannot be overlooked.
In fact, in Sejong, COVID-19 that started from Zumba dance has spread to government ministry officials (Ministry of Health and Welfare, Presidential Archives) and then to officials at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, who in turn infected their spouses, among other cases.
Accordingly, the city plans to focus on blocking the spread within central government ministries through cooperation with the government and severing the links through which COVID-19 could spread from central ministries to local communities.
Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong City, said, “The city takes the situation of consecutive COVID-19 confirmations among government officials very seriously and will establish a cooperative system with the government to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread further into the local community.” He added, “We ask Sejong citizens and government officials to refrain from events, gatherings, and business trips and to participate in social distancing efforts.”
Meanwhile, on the 11th in Sejong, two women in their 40s, one man in his 40s, one man in his 50s, and one girl in her teens tested positive for COVID-19. Among them, three officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries were confirmed: one woman in her 40s, one man in his 40s, and one man in his 50s.
