Park Won-soon Proposes 'Disaster Emergency Living Expenses' Support to Government... Shincheonji Tax Investigation Launched
Monthly living expenses of 300,000 KRW for two months from February to March
Paid in lump sum via local love gift certificates or prepaid cards
City and Sincheonji local tax audits initiated
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 10th, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon requested the government to implement disaster emergency living expense support nationwide. He asked for a one-time payment of 600,000 KRW in total, 300,000 KRW per month for two months (February and March), to all households below the median income who were not included in this supplementary budget support.
According to the city on the day, the government’s supplementary budget limits support for small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners mainly to indirect support, credit guarantees, or loan assistance. The city judged that support for self-employed individuals and small business owners not enrolled in employment insurance, who suffered direct damage due to decreased consumption, is insufficient.
The disaster emergency living expense support targets proposed by the city include self-employed individuals not enrolled in employment insurance, small business owners, non-regular workers, part-time workers, cultural and artistic workers, freelancers, and adjunct instructors. To prevent overlapping support, about 8 million households excluding those already covered by existing welfare programs are eligible. The support method is a lump-sum payment of 600,000 KRW per household, 300,000 KRW per month, with a choice between local love gift certificates or prepaid cards. Mayor Park said, "We must quickly prepare detailed support measures for the vulnerable groups not protected by existing welfare programs," and added, "Implementing this simultaneously nationwide will ensure fairness between regions and make the effect more distinct."
