[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] The Justice Party and Assemblyman Yoon So-ha have continuously advocated for the establishment of medical schools and the expansion of university hospitals to address the shortage of essential medical personnel, particularly doctors, in the region.
According to Assemblyman Yoon So-ha on the 2nd, at a meeting held on the 28th of last month between President Moon Jae-in and the leaders of the four ruling and opposition parties to discuss cooperation measures in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Justice Party leader Shim Sang-jung proposed a long-term plan to fundamentally resolve the shortage of doctors revealed by the COVID-19 crisis by expanding regional medical personnel through the establishment of new medical schools.
Assemblyman Yoon So-ha obtained a Ministry of Education research project titled "Feasibility Study on the Establishment of Mokpo University Medical School and Affiliated Hospital" through his activities in the National Assembly Budget and Accounts Special Committee in 2017, and announced the research results in January.
The study was conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, a government-funded research institute under the Prime Minister's Office. The main findings recognized the feasibility and necessity of establishing Mokpo University Medical School and its affiliated hospital. If both the medical school and affiliated hospital are established together, it is estimated to directly employ 4,714 people and indirectly employ 18,000 people, with a direct production inducement effect of 943.8 billion KRW and an indirect production inducement effect of 1.4897 trillion KRW, indicating a significant impact on the regional economy.
Assemblyman Yoon So-ha stated, "Jeollanam-do is the only region without a medical school, and within Jeollanam-do, the establishment of Mokpo University Medical School has already completed government-level research projects," adding, "Since 1997, citizens have continuously gathered demands to attract Mokpo University Medical School."
He continued, "Over the past four years of legislative activities, we have repeatedly obtained positive responses from government research projects and the Ministry of Health and Welfare," and added, "Recently, even the ruling party has made this issue a campaign pledge, so the establishment of Mokpo University Medical School has already gained consensus across the political spectrum."
