"Jobs in Future Cars" Technical Workforce Increased 5 Times in 3 Years... 90,000 Expected in 8 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The number of technical personnel working in the future automobile industry, including eco-friendly vehicles and autonomous vehicles, has increased more than fivefold over three years. Additionally, the demand for personnel in the future car industry is expected to reach approximately 90,000 by 2028.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 2nd, as of the end of 2018, the total number of industrial technical personnel working in the future automobile industry was 50,533, a 5.3-fold increase compared to the end of 2015.
By sector, eco-friendly vehicles such as electric and hydrogen cars accounted for 42,443 personnel, autonomous vehicles 5,021, and infrastructure 3,068. Compared to the end of 2015, the number of personnel in the eco-friendly vehicle sector increased 7.3 times, showing the largest growth.
By job function, production technology accounted for 23,438 personnel, followed by research and development with 17,186. Compared to the end of 2015, research and development personnel surged 8.1 times.
The factors contributing to the increase in personnel were analyzed as ▲an increase in new companies participating in the future automobile industry ▲growth of existing companies' future automobile business areas ▲expansion of industry scope due to convergence between industries.
As of the end of 2018, the shortage of personnel was 1,827, with a shortage rate of 3.5%. By sector, shortages were higher in infrastructure and autonomous vehicle fields; by job function, in design, quality control; and by education level, the shortage rate was higher among university graduates.
The demand for future automobile industry technical personnel is expected to reach 89,069 by 2028. By sector, eco-friendly vehicles will require 71,935 personnel, autonomous vehicles 11,603, and infrastructure 5,531. Although eco-friendly vehicles account for a high proportion (80.8%), the average annual growth rate is expected to be highest in autonomous vehicles (8.7%).
By job function, production technology will require 42,486 personnel, research and development 29,117, and testing and verification 3,393. Production technology personnel, who support the production and distribution of future cars, are expected to show the highest average annual growth rate (6.1%).

Meanwhile, since 2016, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has been conducting a survey on industrial technical personnel in cooperation with the Korea Institute for Industrial Technology and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade to understand the changing personnel structure and status of the future car industry.
