The Democratic Party Gwangju City Party issued a statement on the day, saying, "The cry and spirit of 'Long live Korean independence,' which echoed throughout the country 101 years ago, was the noble spirit that served as the foundation for democracy on this land, including the April 19 Revolution, the June 10 Struggle, and the May 18 Democratization Movement," adding, "It ultimately led to the 'Candlelight Revolution,' which drove out the forces of state corruption through the power of the great people."
They continued, "Now, facing difficulties due to the spread of COVID-19, we reflect on the special meaning given by the 101st anniversary of the March 1st Movement," emphasizing, "The spirit of the March 1st Movement symbolizes the national character that anything can be overcome together. Our people are volunteering themselves, providing meals, and lowering rents, making united efforts to overcome the crisis."
They also explained, "The government is making the utmost efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of the people through faster and more accurate testing and thorough quarantine measures than any other country in the world."
They added, "We will do our best to complete a just Republic of Korea that matches the great status of the people," emphasizing, "We remind ourselves that the completion of the Republic of Korea, which no one can shake, can only be achieved by fully obeying the people's mandate, and we will take the lead in ensuring the safety of the people."
