According to Sky News on the 29th (local time), a spokesperson for Prime Minister Johnson stated, "The Prime Minister and Ms. Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement," adding, "They are expecting a child in early summer."
The couple has been living together at 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence, since Johnson took office in July last year.
This will be the first time a sitting British Prime Minister has had a child since David Cameron in August 2010.
At that time, Prime Minister Cameron and his wife had their daughter in Cornwall, a popular resort area in southwest England, and named her "Florence Rose Endellion Cameron," incorporating the name of a nearby village.
If Prime Minister Johnson marries while in office, he will be the first British Prime Minister to do so in the past 200 years.
Johnson previously married Allegra Mostyn-Owen, a fellow Oxford University alumna, in 1987, but divorced after an affair with his second wife Marina Wheeler was revealed.
Johnson and Wheeler, who have four children, ended their 25-year marriage with a divorce.
Separately, Johnson fathered a daughter from an extramarital relationship with art consultant Helen Macintyre.
Following the news of Johnson's engagement, Sajid Javid, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer who recently resigned after disagreements with him, congratulated him on Twitter, calling it "amazing news."
Ruth Davidson, former leader of the Scottish Conservative Party, also expressed her congratulations to Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.
Meanwhile, Symonds, who studied art history and related subjects at the University of Warwick, has worked as an advisor under several politicians and was later appointed as the Conservative Party's communications director, building connections with politicians.
She is currently working at the environmental protection organization Oceana.
