[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Inha University announced on the 25th that it will safely transport Chinese international students arriving before the start of the semester from the airport to their accommodations to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Student transportation is conducted individually using call vans provided by Incheon City and will continue until the 15th of next month, before the semester begins. Currently, there are about 740 Chinese international students enrolled at Inha University.
The university is temporarily providing the 3rd Dormitory Hall as accommodation for Chinese international students. Students will live separately in this facility for two weeks from the day of their arrival. The dormitory can accommodate about 100 people.
Dedicated staff are assigned to the dormitory: three staff members for student support, one for facility management, one for hygiene management, and one for security management, totaling six people. Lunch boxes and snacks are provided at every meal.
Additionally, shared areas such as the dormitory entrance, hallways, and elevators are disinfected four times daily at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m.
Inha University has established a hotline with Michuhol-gu Public Health Center and operates a COVID-19 prevention call center for all foreign students, including Chinese students. Seven staff members are in charge.
Students who entered the country via China are monitored daily through phone calls and SNS, and are informed about behavioral guidelines. If infection is suspected, support is provided to report to the university health center, local public health centers, and medical institutions.
Furthermore, the university health center advises students with fever, cough, sore throat, or other respiratory symptoms to consult or report by phone. The reports are forwarded to Michuhol-gu Public Health Center and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. They then screen patients for treatment and separate those for virus testing and self-quarantine management.
Among about 200 Chinese international students who arrived earlier, around 100 students without symptoms have been released from self-quarantine. Students in self-quarantine in dormitories are monitored regularly by 20 emergency response TF monitoring staff.
Previously, Inha University decided to postpone the semester start date from the 2nd to the 16th of next month by two weeks.
President Jo Myung-woo stated, "As the spread of COVID-19 is accelerating, we are discussing various measures to ensure no problems arise before the semester begins next month."
