Chungnam, Developing 'Daesan Port' as a Central Region Hub Port
[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province has proposed a plan to develop Seosan Daesan Port into a specialized hub port in the central region.
On the 24th, the province held the final report meeting for the "Daesan Port Hub Port Development Specialization Study." The study focused on developing Daesan Port's facilities, hinterland complexes, and transportation networks to foster it as a central port handling exports and imports with China and Southeast Asia.
Dongseo University and Sekwang Comprehensive Technology Group, which conducted the study, presented development plans by sector including ▲port facilities ▲hinterland complexes ▲transportation networks ▲marina ▲cruise ▲cargo volume generation measures during the final report.
First, the port facilities were set with the goal of developing an advanced complex port centered on maritime and logistics through port development. The core idea is to attract cargo volume from nearby petroleum and chemical companies to revitalize existing wharf functions, expand cargo volume attraction in the Chungcheong region, and strengthen commercial port functions such as expanding wharf facilities.
Additionally, the plan includes improving transportation infrastructure connecting Daesan Port by expanding roads and railways through the Daesan-Dangjin Expressway (24 km), Iwon-Daesan Marine Bridge (5 km), and extension of the Seokmun Industrial Complex railway.
As measures to generate cargo volume, the plan includes expanding cargo volume attraction from Daesan Port's petroleum and chemical companies, expanding shipping routes by attracting shipping companies, improving incentive systems, forming and operating public-private consultative bodies, and expanding Chungcheong region cargo attraction through corporate marketing.
Previously, Daesan Port's cargo volume has continuously increased due to the growth of Chungcheong region cargo, recording 66.543 million tons in 2011, 78.514 million tons in 2015, and reaching 92.631 million tons in 2018, ranking 6th among 31 national trade ports based on cargo volume.
