United Future Party Daegu·Gyeongbuk Lawmakers Demand "Declare Special Disaster Area"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] Members of the Future United Party from the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions demanded that Daegu and Gyeongbuk be declared special disaster areas.
In a statement on the 24th, they said, "Currently, the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions are engulfed in tremendous chaos, with the entire city paralyzed socioeconomically due to shortages of basic necessities such as masks and medical equipment," adding, "The government belatedly raised the infectious disease crisis alert to the 'serious' level in words only, but there is no practical support at all."
They continued, "Due to the government's complacent perception, the initial quarantine failed, and the delayed crisis alert caused the region-centered quarantine and medical system to collapse rapidly. The direct and indirect damages and the fear among local residents are indescribable. The government must declare Daegu and Gyeongbuk as special disaster areas and immediately provide concentrated support for medical equipment, masks, and other daily necessities, as well as urgent livelihood support due to the devastated economy, and actively engage in relief activities."

They also demanded full-scale budget execution. The lawmakers stated, "The government keeps talking about supplementary budgets, but it already has 1 trillion won in special grants and 3.4 trillion won in reserve funds. These should be executed immediately even before the supplementary budget."
